I was only eight years old when I recognized the power of development communication. Every Saturday morning, a radio drama titled “Abule Oloke Merin” (“The Village of Four Floors”) would play from the stereo in our living room. This radio drama was produced by a nonprofit organization committed to improving family health outcomes.

Through this drama, I learned about the genetic causes of sickle cell anemia and gained clarity on the cultural myth of “abiku” (a term used to describe a child who die young). This was long before my Integrated Science and Biology classes addressed these topics in secondary school. The knowledge I gained from that program has remained with me, influencing my health choices and worldview to to date. This personal experience shaped my firm belief that children should be intentionally included in SBCC programming.

Many SBCC interventions focus on adults or teenagers and leave out children, however, children represent a critical demographic that is too often overlooked. Targeting children may require additional planning and tailored approaches, but the potential for long-term impact makes it a necessary investment.

Financial institutions recognize this, which is why they develop child-focused savings plans to build long-term relationships. Similarly, when children are exposed to transformative messages at a formative stage, they are more likely to carry those behaviors into adulthood, creating a ripple effect that benefits communities for generations.

2. Receptiveness to Change:
Children are naturally adaptable. Their cognitive and behavioral patterns are still forming, making them more open to new information, values, and attitudes. This developmental stage offers a unique opportunity to instill positive social norms before harmful behaviors are established.

Behavioral Multipliers:
Parents and caregivers often recount moments when children correct them based on lessons learned at school, in faith-based settings, or from media. Children not only internalize messages quickly, they often become messengers themselves, influencing their families and peers.

4. Access through Existing Structures:
Children are highly reachable through formal and informal institutions such as schools, religious organizations, and after-school programs. Also by leveraging media and communication platforms they already engage with such as cartoons, jingles, and educational games, children can be reached effectively and consistently.

Designing SBCC Strategies That Center Children

SBCC aims to influence knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors using a diverse of communication approaches. When children are the target audience, it is crucial to embed messages in formats that are educational, entertaining, and age-appropriate. Below are some suggested strategies for designing impactful child-focused SBCC initiatives:

Educational Games: Games encourage creativity and engagement while delivering key messages. An example of such educative games is Monopoly, a game that teaches financial literacy, likewise, customized games can promote messages on hygiene, empathy, inclusion, health practices, climate responsibility or any social issues in an interactive way.

Animated Content: Animation has a universal appeal among children. Whether through short videos, musical skits, or full-length cartoons, animated content can be used to deliver messages in a format children find accessible and fun.

School-Based Campaigns: Organizing school outreach programs with games, role-plays, and music competitions can reinforce project messaging while fostering peer learning. Activities like sing-along challenges with SBCC-themed jingles can drive retention and enthusiasm.

Illustrated Storybooks: Children’s books, especially those with vibrant illustrations and relatable characters, are powerful tools for message transmission. Storybooks can be developed to align with specific project goals while supporting literacy and social learning outcomes. One of my colleagues remembers reading a series of books that not only taught children about health, hygiene and taking care of your siblings, but also encouraged readers to teach other children what they had learned in the book.

Conclusion
Children may not always be the primary target in SBCC campaigns, but their inclusion can significantly amplify outcomes and ensure sustainability. By designing interventions that speak their language and match their interests, and, very importantly, including them in the design stage of these interventions, we not only shape the behaviors of today’s youngest generation, we lay the foundation for healthier, more informed communities in the future.

Every 10 minutes around the world, a woman is killed.

It is critical that we all sit with that for a minute and consider the implications of that reality.

There are 60 minutes in an hour, and 24 hours in a day, which means that EVERY day, cumulatively around the world, 144 – One hundred and forty-four – women are murdered.

Perhaps what is even sadder is that the majority of these women are murdered by their partners and family members. For these women, and for many others like them across the world, the place where a person should be most safe and feel protected from harm – their home – became a place where the end of their lives were heralded.

Femicide, an intentional killing of a woman or girl because of her gender. There are countries around the world where so little value is placed on having a daughter that girls are murdered by their parents and extended families. There are countries where, in cases where girls are allowed to grow up, it is with an understanding that they exist to serve the males around them, as daughters, sisters, wives, and mothers.

Exactly 7 days ago, in Nigeria, Hauwa Shaffii Nuhu published a report on HumAngle titled, “A Tragic Femicide Case in Northeastern Nigeria Smells Like Honour Killing,” where she took us through the journey of Falmata, a 17 year old girl in Bama, Borno State, who was murdered by her uncle, her father’s brother, for the apparently unforgivable sin of disrespect.

Buoyed by cultural and social norms, this man, her uncle, murdered Falmata while she was asleep in the room she shared with her mother, daring to tell a mother whose child he had just murdered that he had dug her daughter’s grave and she could bury her at 9am the next morning.

Every time I think about this report, I feel an ache begin to form at my left temple. What level of disregard of the inherent value in a woman’s life allows you to just murder someone and then go about your day like it was just a regular day of the week? What kind of value system does a community operate that makes this kind of crime even conceivable? And for the love of God, what kind of faux legal system do we operate in Nigeria that arrests a grieving mother on the day of her daughter’s funeral, while her daughter’s killer roams free?

Violence Against Women and Girls exists within a cycle of abuse that sometimes culminates in the murder of a woman or girl. But it rarely begins there.

The casualization of women’s agency is a step in the cycle. The prevailing rape culture and determined re-victimization of survivors of gender-based violence is a step in the cycle. The predominant hierarchical system in our society that places different values on individuals based on their gender is a step in the cycle. The silencing of women’s voices, and by extension, their agency, is a step in that cycle. The harsh, often disproportionate response, to dissent, especially when it comes from a woman, is a step in the horrendous cycle of gender-based violence.

These steps, often trivialized as standalones, are the perfect recipe for the creation of a society, of a world, where a woman is murdered every 10 minutes and it’s just another day because what else is new?

And so we must all take responsibility. In our homes, among family members, in our places of work, our places of worship, and the places where we hold any form of power.

You have a daughter and a son? Ensure both of them know that none is beholden to serve the other simply on the basis of gender.

You read about a case of abuse or rape? Take a minute before typing your opinion to ask yourself if it is one that centers the humanity of the survivor or it’s one that plays into tired tropes.

Your friend makes a ‘joke’ that trivializes a woman’s agency? Call it out, right there, on the spot.

We must deliberately and intentionally contribute to building the framework of a society where everyone is respected, their opinions judged on its merit, and one where gender-based violence simply has no place.

Attendees were treated to a dynamic discussion during the exhibition and workshop, followed by a captivating listening session featuring iconic radio dramas such as “Safe Journey,” “Boomerang,” and “Taxi Driver.” These timeless classics have left an indelible mark on the radio landscape and continue to inspire storytellers today.

It was indeed a memorable experience, delving into the magic of storytelling through the airwaves.

“Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world”- Nelson Mandela.

Research has shown that the concept of education is beyond the ability to read and write, but rather a paradigm shift that involves the acquisition of knowledge, information, critical thinking, empowerment, and the ability to make the world a better place.

“We fear what we don’t understand, what we fear we judge as evil, what we judge as evil, we attempt to control, and what we cannot control, we attack”- Dan Brown

Lack of access to quality information and education is a leading cause of violence and conflict in Nigeria, many at war geo-political zones in Nigeria suffer from the spread of an uncontrollable, undetectable and communicable virus called mis-information.

Mis-information, hate speech, and the spread of fake news has continued to rampage across northern Nigeria, as they record a high prevalence of violence, conflict, outbreaks of wars (interfaith, tribal, ethnic, etc), and deaths, and as such been termed as “at risk conflict zones”.

“Peace education is both an important peacebuilding strategy, and an effective way of preventing violent conflict” – Lorreta Navarro and Jasmine Nairo

To reduce the prevalence of conflict and promote peace in at-risk conflict zones in northern Nigeria, there is a need to integrate peacebuilding education, to mitigate violent conflict in these zones.

Conflict instigators and manipulators often use fake news, misinformation, perception, and facts to create conflict. Improving access to quality peacebuilding education will reduce the effects of these manipulations by providing citizens in these regions with the ability to understand conflict resolution and what to do with information that may trigger conflict.

Education leads to empowerment and promotes inclusion, bringing people together, helping them solve problems, providing psychological support to address issues, biases, and traumas that can fuel conflict by giving the audience a path forward.

Through the CIPP project, ARDA has successfully educated, sensitized, and provided access to quality information on conflict prevention mechanisms to community members through our radio drama series (Wake Daya and My neighbour, My Friend) aired across the six (6) CIPP project states.

‘’I love listening to Liberty radio and the first day, I heard the program ‘Wake Daya’’, I liked it and I started following the program and it became my favorite drama on radio. The program has impacted me a lot. Here in Sabon Gayan, Muslims and Christians are living peacefully. Even with the crisis that has been happening in Kaduna, it has never happened here in Sabon Gayan before. This program has made me understand that we can live together in peace and coexist with one another in the community. The recent topic that was discussed with some guests on fake news and hate speech, helped me to understand more about how reposting information on social media without verifying the source can cause harm to the community. Before the program, I thought information on social media is true but now I understand one needs to verify the source before sharing it. Now if not from radio or news I don’t take any information without verifying.’’- Fauziyya, Soban Gayan LGA, Kaduna State.

‘’I like to listen to “My Neighbour My Friend Radio Program every Tuesday on Grace FM in Lokoja. I have learned many things from the program. Part of it is how I can live together with other people in my community irrespective of their ethnic or religious background. From the program, I learned that dialogue is important in resolving conflict between people. Looking at what I have learned on the program, I plan to tell my friends and neighbors on the importance of living together in peace”. – Danlai, Konto-Karfe LGA, Kogi State.

The media literacy capacity-building seminar organized by ARDA, five hundred and ninety-nine (599) young people including men, women, and Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) were educated on embracing social media as a vital tool for promoting peace and facilitating sustainable peace in their communities.

” I have learnt that when identifying fake news, you have to read beyond the headlines, I have learnt that I need to do my research before posting, and commenting. i learnt that when I see any information, I should first confirm if its fake news before spread it, because fake news also trends”. – Blessing Kumve Benue state

“I learnt that fake news causes anxiety and conflict. This seminar has helped to further my knowledge on how verify fake news, gather real fact and most importantly fake news to leads to social vices, unrest and even health challenges”. – Joel Olusola Abel-Kogi state

The Women’s Critical Discussion Groups (WCDG) has deepened the engagement of women in peacebuilding by empowering and building the capacity of local women as peace advocates within their communities.

“The program has impacted knowledge in us as a group and has built our capacity on how to tackle issues with friends, relatives, neighbours, and the general public. We also have gained knowledge on the proper and moral upbringing of our children. We also learned how to contribute to the community by promoting peaceful coexistence, conflict resolution among community members, and encouraging education and skills among the women… The program has also encouraged collaboration within the group and among community members.”

Hauwa Kabir (Member, Rijiyar Lemo Women’s Critical Discussion Group Kano State)

“From this group, we have learnt so much. We have learned a lot about creating awareness, how we tackle drugs among our youth in the community, and how to address youths’ joblessness and idleness. Women in the community do call us to inform us about their interest in joining the group. We have gained acceptance as women in our community who are qualified to advise community members, and they listen to us…. The incidents of rape have reduced, and many parents are now sending their children to school unlike before.”

Wasila Gambo Member, Kofar Guga Women’s Critical Discussion Group Katsina State.

To achieve SDG 16 and promote sustainable peace in at-risk conflict zones, government, individuals, civil society, organizations, and community development associations leaders must work together to reduce all forms of violence that instigate violence, deliver justice unbiased, ensure inclusive participation at all times, leveraging on opportunities to educate one another on the need to foster peace in the communities.

“Those who are at war with others, are not at peace with themselves” – William Hazlitt.

ARDA, the foremost Development Communication NGO in Nigeria, with over 20 years of changing norms and behaviours through drama and entertainment, is excited to celebrate International Women’s Month with the production of The Wives’ Revolt, a stage play by the literary icon, JP Clark.

When a small community in the Niger-Delta receives a payout from the oil company drilling their land, it turns out to be the kindling that stokes the flames of revolution in the women of the town. The money is to be shared three ways- elders, men and women- with the community elders getting the lion’s share. The women of the town, who have long suffered injustice and marginalisation complain about the unfairness of this arrangement; the elders are also men, meaning they enjoy a second helping from the payout.

The women’s complaints are silenced in a ridiculous way involving accusations of witchcraft. When these accusations lead to further hardships on them, including loss of their livelihoods, the women in “one might and mind” say enough is enough and take action in a most unorthodox way

As we celebrate International Women’s Month and reflect on its theme of #Balanceforbetter, we bring to you The Wives’ Revolt, a play about the marginalisation of women and the injustices they face in life, and what happens when women in one community decided to stand up against their oppressors and oppression with the support of a few good men. The play seeks to highlight the ignorance and unconsciousness of men on certain issues that remain important to women.

Even though nearly four decades have passed since The Wives’ Revolt was first staged, the themes of gender inequality and misogyny remain relevant today. Some things have changed for the better, but there is still a lot of work to be done, and we hope our production inspires a positive revolution towards more gender equality in our day to day lives.

The play features a stellar cast comprising some of Nigeria’s finest Theatre exports Toyin Oshinaike, Zara Udofia Ejoh and Albert Akaeze as directed by Toritseju Ejoh. It opens on the 29th of March 2019 with a command performance at 7 pm and two public showings on the 31st of March 2019 at 3 pm and 7 pm respectively at the Agip recital hall of the Muson Centre, Lagos.
